METEORA

5dMeteora Project: Digital Documentation and Reconstruction of Meteora’s Cultural Heritage

The 5dMeteora project focuses on the documentation and digitization of part of the Archaeological Site of Meteora.

The main study area includes two inaccessible rocks: the rock of St. Modestos (“Modi”) and the rock of the Chain of Apostle Peter (“Alyssos”). Both rocks preserve the ruins of old monasteries on their summits.

Focus on St. Modestos and Alyssos

Within the project, the Monastery of St. Modestos is being digitally reconstructed. This reconstruction is available through the project’s visualization platform and also through an Augmented Reality (AR) app.

These two rocks were selected because they contain important archaeological findings. They are also linked to a monastic community whose establishment and development remain largely unexplored until today.

In addition, their special topography and geological morphology make them particularly significant for research and digital documentation.

Wider Study Area in Meteora

Beyond Modi and Alyssos, the 5dMeteora project also covers a wider area of the Holy Site of Meteora.

The broader study area includes:

  • the six active Monasteries of Meteora
  • the Pyxari rock
  • hermitages
  • other important cultural heritage sites in the wider region

Preserving Meteora Through Digital Technologies

Through advanced digital tools, the 5dMeteora project contributes to the preservation, study and promotion of Meteora’s unique cultural heritage.

By combining documentation, digitization, 3D reconstruction and Augmented Reality, the project helps make important monuments and historic sites more accessible for research, education and public engagement.
